How it Works

  • Retail value of this program is $915 but if you sign up for the full program, you receive a ~24% discount of $215 with the full program costing $100 per month for 7 months.
  • By making this 7 month payment commitment, students are purchasing a digital punch card with access to the aforementioned class material.
  • Students may take as many offered classes a week as make senses for their skill level and can complete the boot camp as quickly as possible (usually 4-5 months at an accelerated pace).
  • Students who prefer to take their time have 1 year from the date of their first class to complete all the credits before they expire
  • The first payment counts for the month in which the first class of the first series students are attending occurs. For example, if the student pay the 23rd of July and class series starts the 28th of July, July is the first month of the boot camp and the second payment is due August 15. If the student pays the 23rd of July and the class starts the 1st of August, August is the first month of the boot camp and the next payment is not due until September 15.
  • The additional 6 payments of $100 are due on the 15th of each consecutive month via an online link provided by the instructor.
  • All payments are due even if students misses or discontinues classes under all circumstances.
  • To attend the intermediate zoom classes, students will receive access to a Zoom link, using 1 credit for each class they attend.
  • Spots are limited; to ensure you get a spot in a particular session, contact GlitterGirl in advance.
  • Students interested in trading in flex credits for videos, private instruction or both (per the conversations shown above), should contact GlitterGirl directly to make arrangements as appropriate. Do not purchase videos directly from the Temple of Poi Digital Store as GlitterGirl will send you free downloads as part of your flex credit conversions.
  • Regardless of how many courses are being attended a week or how quickly students completes the curriculum, payments are spread out over 7 consecutive months in even payments of $100 per month. This means students could complete the boot camp before all tuition payments are made or pay the full tuition and have months worth of credits left, depending on attendance.
  • As of this writing, Intermediate+ Mixed Level Zoom Based Poi sessions will happen at least 1x a week at 8 PM pacific on Tuesdays for 80 minutes. This will be updated accordingly as the Covid-19 situation unfolds.
  • We work with our client’s to create our class schedule in a way that works for them to the degree that this is possible and boot camp students are given first priority to both shape the future of the curriculum and to reserve class spots.
  • Tuition does not include additional gear including poi (we recommend you start with soft poi — here are 6 ways to make poi from household items), costumes, fuel, insurance and other expenses poi/fire dancers may incur.
  • Students will sign a contract agreeing to these terms.
  • As with college, if students miss a session unexpectedly (i.e., sickness, emergency, airport delay, etc.) the class continues without them. Students will be provided with the Zoom video material for Beginner Moves and Beginner Dance to help them catch up on their own. If students miss an intermediate class, they can simply attend a future week* and no credit will be used.
  • Study Buddy discount is a “2 for 1.5 special” where two students pay the tuition of 1.5 students because they are using the same zoom window to enjoy this program. Each week, one of the two primary students may attend and can bring a guest with them, either the other primary student, or a different drop in student, who will use the same zoom window, thus, whoever attends, both people must be in person with each other.

Is this for me?

Boot camp attendees need to be 9-10+ year old able-bodied humans with space enough to spin 2 objects the length of their arms around them who have access to reliable network connectivity over Zoom. Because the practice is not for everyone, we recommend you try some poi before committing the boot camp. In addition, because our style of teaching isn’t what all students prefer, we recommend you peruse some of the free lessons we have on YouTube, the free download for the Beginner Moves Video Series, the Tutorial Tuesday videos on Instagram or the free 20 minute download for beginners to give you a sense of the teaching style we use here at Temple of Poi. We do not recommend people sign up for the boot camp unless they are clear they are committed to practice. Poi calls for practice outside of the classroom to progress in skills. We encourage students to set a time based goal since we can’t control how long it will take to learn something, only how much time we spend in the practice.

If you have no experience, this class is definitely for you. If you have limited experience then this class is probably for you — contact GlitterGirl (glittergirl [that pretty little at sign] templeofpoi [daaaaaaught] com) to set up your free assessment to see where you fit in our curriculum.

Why Poi?

In this new era of Covid-19 where social distancing is an embraced practice, poi is a fantastic tool that allows you to be be social and be distant since spinning poi for beginners calls for enough space to spin them around the body, thus creating a 6′ distance around you. Other things to consider:

  • Does your “new normal” need a new hobby?
  • Looking for more at home physical activity?
  • Want a fun new moving meditation that’s energizing and relaxing at the same time?
  • Need some PhysEd sessions for your kids while you’re home schooling?
  • Instead of that coffee break, want a fun and challenging afternoon pick-me-up?
  • Looking to improve your reflexes and increase bilateral coordination?
  • Are you Bored In the House?
  • Want to learn a new party trick for when we’re finally out at parties again?
  • Is your monkey-mind getting the better of you and every tool you’ve been using hasn’t worked?

If so, poi will help bring you and your loved ones some exercise, excitement, challenge, bilateral coordination, meditation, expression and an impressive party tricks too!

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I’ve done a lot of beginner practice but don’t feel confident with the moves. Is this the right program for me?
  • I had an emergency arise and can’t complete the boot camp right now. Do I still have to pay?
    • Yes. Due to the nature of our small classes and the fact that we schedule classes and offer this discount based on your ongoing payments, clients are required to make all 7 payments regardless of attendance at one/any session. However, students have a year from the night of the first class they took to complete the credits, offering quite a bit of extra time to complete the credits.
  • I missed a class – can I make it up?
    • Students attending beginner classes will be provided the Zoom Class videos along with the pre-recorded videos to help them catch up. Intermediate sessions have leeway for missing sessions and don’t require making up material.
  • After completing the boot camp, what level of skill should I expect to be at?
      • Students who complete all the material in the boot camp should expect to be able to casually perform comfortably in front of their friends and family with fire. As with all practices, the more the student puts into the practice, the more they will get out. Here’s a student about 4 months into her boot camp executing her third fire poi burn ever.

  • Is the Zoom Class the same as watching free videos on YouTube?
    • No, not at all. A YouTube video will always say the same thing at the any given  time code whereas live classes, while intended to teach the same material, are responsive to students needs and structured specifically to meet students where they are in their practice. As educators, our job is to communicate in the language each student needs rather than saying the same thing and assuming everyone will understand it. To that end, we present the information in various ways until it clicks with the practitioner.
  • Will I get personalized feedback on what I’m doing while the classes are running?
    • Yes! Part of the variations in content lesson to lesson comes from the specific feedback offered to each student. Where you might be able to turn left when everyone is turning right in a Modern, Jazz or Hip-Hop class with little to no impact, it’s often the case that a misstep in poi means a bop in the face or other body parts, making it much harder to fake it.
  • Can I ask questions?
    • Yes — and we encourage it! Unlike some dance classes where you are anonymous in the back of the room with little or no relationship to the teacher and your peers, we strive to create a community wherein people are honored as individuals with different strengths and weaknesses. Each class opens with a check-in and questions so we can share our experiences: if you’ve got that question, chances are, other people have had that same question too.  We also do checkins throughout the class where people can ask questions that are specific to the material we are learning.
  • How can you give everyone feedback while teaching a group?
    • In short, we’ve set this up like a dance studio. Instead of using mirrors, we have two cameras for the instructor. One camera offers the back view as the spotlighted camera during the teaching section. In front of the teacher is a large screen with the students on it in “Brady Bunch” squares which allows the teacher to see the students real time and offer feedback to everyone while the students are watching the teacher from behind for ease of modeling the new material.
  • D534A380-2E89-4656-A026-1F04B85EFED5Do I have to practice outside of class?
    • While a small percentage of students do progress simply by attending class and being attentive, that is very rare. If you’re interested in success in the practice, we recommend at least 3 20 minute sessions outside of class per week. As with most things in life, the more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it.
  • I’m not sure how I’ll do with the practice. Do I need to invest in expensive poi to try this?
    • No! In fact, we recommend you make your first set out of household items that are soft and, as you gain excitement and confidence, acquire more fun poi tools. Hundreds of students have purchased LED poi as a reward when they achieve a particular set of goals in their practice, which ensures the investment is a smart one. Before making a purchase, please confer with us for a product recommendation. Not all LED poi are created equally and the less expensive ones often end up in the landfill because they’re often low quality.
  • I’m uncoordinated and have two left feet. I’m drawn to it, but can someone like me really do this?
      • Yes! You can! The short answer is that the way we teach is designed to help you, step by step, get from being a dork (let’s face it, you will hit yourself and feel like a dork in the beginning) to finding your flow with a curriculum that helps you build the skills you need. Here’s a longer answer from GlitterGirl talking about some transformational experiences students had with poi over the years.
