Photographers and want to be photographers, you are invited to join Bay Area fire photography experts Larry WongDon Albonico, Dalton Chan and Brian Sorensen and fire dancing artists, GlitterGirl, Nova, The Amazing Zihni, Cary the Cosmic Cowboy & Leilani for a night of fire dancing photography fun from which we will have the Spring Forward photo contest.

About the Photography Clinic

The event will run from 7:30 to 9:30 PM on Thursday, March 31 at the Palace of Fine Arts. Here’s how the evening will progress.

  • We will set up two different photography areas at a time. One station will be focused on extended exposure photography and one station will be focused on snap shots.
  • Photographers will offer information on how to shoot the fire dancing models at different stations.
  • Artists will rotate through the stations.
  • After each of 5 artists has been in both stations (one focused on extended photography and one focused on snapshots), we will move to a different location within the venue and repeat the same cycle.
  • We will work with three different stations over the evening, with estimated start times of 7:45 station one, 8:15 station 2 and 8:45 station 3.

The photo contest will open on Thursday, March 31, and will close at 12 PM, April 8, 2016. Here are the rules:

  • There will be a total of 10 categories for this contest: One long exposure and one short exposure photo per fire dancing artist.
  • The fire dancing artists will be the judges.
  • Photographers can enter up to two photos per category per entrance fee of $5 per category or $35 for all 10 categories (up to 20 total photos).
  • Eligible photos must be taken the evening of the Spring Forward Photography Clinic.
  • To enter, select the category below, pay the fee for that category using the link and after payment has been completed, you will be directed to a web form where you will be asked for the following information for each category:
    • Your Name as you wish it to appear for photo credit
    • Company name, if applicable
    • Email where you can be reached
    • URL of the image (and second image if you’d like to submit two)

    Entrants retain ownership and all other rights to submitted photographs subject to the following: By entering the Temple of Poi Spring Forward Fire Photography contest, each entrant grants Temple of Poi/GlitterGirl and the artist in the photo a nonexclusive, irrevocable license to reproduce, publish and display submitted images in all media throughout the world directly in relation to the competition, including but not limited to use in the content of the Temple of Poi Website, social media and future promotions of this context in perpetuity.

  • Winners will be announced on or after April 15, 2016, after which the prizes will be awarded.
  • Prizes:
    • all submitted photos will be posted to the Temple of Poi Facebook page with a URL to the photographer’s work.
    • A select set of photos will be posted to additional social media (Instagram, blogs, other Facebook pages, Pintrest, etc.) by the artists appearing in the shots and Temple of Poi, also with a URL to the photographer’s work.

Larry Wong is a professional photographer and

Dalton Chan started learning to take pictures on a fully manual SLR 35mm film camera many years ago.  He’s a recreational photographer and loves to explore different ways to capture visual experiences.  He’s been taking fire photography about 4 years and loves the people and the explosive power of fire.  Dalton enjoys the amazing combination of talents between the performers and photographers to create something visually stunning.

Snapshot photography Experts

Don Albonico has been involved with photography for over 30 years. He got into photography shooting sports for his high school paper. It seemed to stick from then on. His first exposure to fire photography was at a Union Square Fire Dance Expo and he has been an avid supporter of the Bay Area fire community ever since. As someone who prefers snapshots, Don
enjoys using the beautiful light provided by the fire dancer’s tools to create a photo.
Brian Sorensen is a devoted photographer who has been capturing fire photography in the Bay Area for several years. His goal is to capture the relationship between the fire and the performer. His work can be found in our private Facebook group — please contact for details on how to join.
