Beginner Dance: Transitions, flow and performance, June 8

DanceFaceOnDevelop transitions and beginner performance theory in this 4 week dance series. This class is the perfect follow up to the Beginner Moves class (or equivalent material: pinwheels, windmills, chasing the sun, butterflies and weaves). If you have some experience and aren’t sure if this class is for you, contact GlitterGirl (glittergirl templeofpoi com) and make arrangements for your free assessment to see where you fit into our curriculum.

This class meets for 4 weeks: Mondays, June 8, 15, 22 and 29 from 8-9:20PM and is an excellent in conjunction with the Beginner Fire class (running May 12, 19, 26 and June 2 at 8 PM). Class will be held at Lines Ballet, 26 7th Street, 5th floor, studio 4, San Francisco, CA.  Tuition is $120 on it’s own but you can earn a $40 discount when you also join us for the next Beginner Poi Fire Class at Temple of Poi.

Course Overview

This four week series teaches students transitions which allow them to combine the moves taught in the Beginner Poi Moves class. Students also learn how to add dance elements to make their performance more interesting and begin exploring their individual style. This class also helps students through their stage fright by allowing them a safe place to perform — in front of other students learning with them. The process affords students the opportunity to see other people at their level and be seen, both giving and receiving feedback that empowers everyone to better understand their strengths and areas of development.  To assist your learning process, you can purchase our Beginner Poi Dance Class Video Series as well as our 38 double sided flashcards for this class.

Each of the classes meets for 80 minutes, one time per week.

Each class is divided into the following class structure:

  • 25 min: warm ups, practice, performance, drills, review
  • 50 min: new move clinic, individual work, drills, practice
  • 5 min: homework assignments, review, cool down

The first class focuses on same direction transitions, the second class on opposing direction transitions, while the third and final class focus on putting the moves together in performance and improving any weak spots the students may still be experiencing. More advanced students will also learn new moves as time permits.

Students must have a working knowledge of poi and have either taken the Beginner Poi Moves Class or performed the relevant moves competently for one of the certified Temple of Poi instructors.

Students can attain the greatest long term discount by signing up for the Temple of Poi Beginner Poi Boot Camp program which offers a 20% discount on 7 months worth of classes. This option is only available to students who paid for the Beginner Poi Moves series and the tuition paid will be applied in full to the first two payments of the Beginner Boot Camp.

Alternately, students registering for the Beginner Poi Dance and Beginner Poi Fire Class Series receive a 23% discount when paying for both sessions at once. Regular tuition is $240 for both series when taken individually ($120 each) and the combined discounted tuition is $200.
