7 Things to Bring to Your Teaching Interview

InstructorsA friend in the community has an interview for a teaching job tomorrow and I was thinking about how I would prepare if I were in his situation. Here’s 7 Things To Bring to a Flow Arts Teaching Interview that will help you stand out and get the job, or at least would if I were interviewing you:

  • A clear intention of what you want to offer them on a linguistic level. For example, my message might be something like, “My goal in class is to empower my clients to have new relationships to their body and their capabilities while having lots of fun developing these new skills.” The message may not be the same in all contexts. For example, if I’m interviewing to do a class at a gym, the word “fitness” would be in there somewhere whereas if I were interviewing at a yoga studio the word “prana” might be in there whereas at a dance studio I would use the phrase “expression through dance.” The point is to have a clearly articulated and easy to understand marketing message that will resonate with the people with whom you are interviewing that inspires them to want to add your classes into their schedule.
  • A clear pedagogy you can explain verbally.  Understand and be able to explain how you built the curriculum in a format that works. Explain how that format works in the context of the location where you’re interviewing. Also understand the structure of how you plan to offer the classes. Will they be drop in? How do you handle that and ensure you can work with the students? Will it be a series class? If so, how long? Do your research before you go so you can understand the model of classes currently being used at the facility where you’re interviewing and develop your structure in alignment with that.
  • A target market and clear benefits. If a studio is going to make an investment in you as an instructor at their facility, be clear on what you offer and how it benefits their clients especially. They already have clients; what would have their clients want to take your class? What benefit does the studio get from choosing to put you on their schedule rather than something else they can do in their space?   • Confidence. Even if you haven’t done it before, you believing you can is the best attitude to have. As the old saying goes, Fake it till you make it. And if you fake it well, they won’t know the difference.
  • Teach a mini class. Walk into the interview prepared to say something like, “The best way to give you a sense of what I do would be to work with you as I would any client. How about a 15 minute mini class so you can get a taste of the awesomeness?” Plan out a 15 mintune curriculum or a lesson plan to teach a single move and then teach that. This also means you should bring the toys/tools you need to actually teach.
  • Do a kick ass demonstration. As great as the teaching will be, be sure that in the lesson plan, you also demonstration what you’ve taught and then how that can be utilized as the basis for other things.
  • Use a standard presentation format. That is to say, follow the tried and true teaching method:
    • tell them what you’re doing to tell them
    • tell them
    • tell them what you told them
    • show them why you care and how that can be used and expanded upon later
